Gourmet Maille Dijon Mustard

Maille Dijon Mustard is a famous gourmet mustard made in the Dijon region of France by Maille (pronounced “my”), a mustard company that has been around since 1747. As a Dijon mustard it has a sharp flavor and a medium-hot bite. It is also fat free and low in sugar! This particular condiment is wonderful on many types of sandwiches and is a helpful tool when trying to spice up everyday lunches for both you and your kids. It is also a great condiment to include at family picnics because it works so well on typical picnic food like hot dogs and hamburgers.

Dijon mustard was first made by Jean Naigeon in 1856 when he substituted verjuice (a sour liquid from unripe grapes) for vinegar. The verjuice was the secret to Naigeon’s recipe and allowed his new type of mustard to be much smoother than typical mustards.

Dijon mustard is so popular today because of the recipe’s specificity. The mustard can be made with only brown or black mustard seeds and verjuice, wine or vinegar. Today, it is often made using vinegar, wine or green grape juice instead of verjuice. The recipe also specifies that no artificial colors or flavors can be added.

While you can keep this mustard at room temperature with no problems, it is best to keep it refrigerated to properly preserve its strong flavor.
