$3.29Roland Whole Peeled Straw Mushrooms
Biologically, this vegetable is called Volvariella volvacea but we can just call them by their more common name: straw mushrooms. No, they aren’t made of straw or have a straw-like texture; their name simply comes from the rice straw on top of which they are grown. Straw mushrooms are incredibly common in Asian food and have been eaten in China for two thousand years. They are grown in Southeast Asia where there is a hot, steamy climate. Specifically, these Roland brand ones are from Vietnam.
As the name denotes, whole peeled straw mushrooms have been peeled, meaning the mushrooms have matured and the caps have opened out of the skin. Once they are peeled, they more closely resemble the shape of a traditional mushroom, rather than the shape of an unpeeled straw mushroom, which looks like a small egg.
Straw mushrooms have a delicate and slightly earthy flavor. This distinct, but mild taste is subtle enough as to not overpower the rest of your dish. They combine well with Chinese mustard greens, snow peas and other vegetables. Use straw mushrooms in stir fries, soups or any other Asian themed meal.
Before using, make sure to drain and rinse thoroughly. And don’t forget to add them near the end of the cooking period because they require very little heat.
