We firmly believe that the Internet should be available and accessible to everyone. Penn Mac is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance or ability.
To fulfill this commitment, Penn Mac's aim is to adhere as closely as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. Following these guidelines helps us make our website more accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired, people with motor impairments, people with cognitive disabilities, and others.
Our website uses various technologies intended to make it as accessible as possible. We use an accessibility interface that allows people with specific disabilities to adjust the website's user interface and design to meet their personal needs.
Additionally, our website uses an AI-based application that runs in the background and continually optimizes accessibility. This application remediates the website's HTML and adapts its functionality and behavior for screen readers used by people who are blind and for keyboard navigation used by people with motor impairments.

Screen Reader and Keyboard Navigation
Our website implements Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) attributes, along with behavioral adjustments, to help people using screen readers read, understand, and use the website's functions. When a person using a screen reader enters the site, they may receive a prompt to activate the Screen Reader Profile so they can browse and operate the site more effectively.
1. Screen-reader optimization: A background process analyzes the website's components to support ongoing accessibility as the site is updated. The process provides screen readers with meaningful information through ARIA attributes, including form labels, descriptions for actionable icons, validation guidance for form inputs, and roles for buttons, menus, modal dialogs, and other elements. It also scans images and may provide image-recognition-based alternate text for images that are not otherwise described. Text embedded in images may also be extracted using optical character recognition (OCR). Screen-reader adjustments can be activated by pressing Alt+1. These adjustments are designed to be compatible with popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process adjusts the website's HTML and adds JavaScript behaviors intended to make the website operable by keyboard. This includes navigating with the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operating drop-down menus with the arrow keys, closing them with Esc, activating buttons and links with Enter, moving among radio buttons and checkboxes with the arrow keys, and selecting them with the Spacebar or Enter key. Keyboard users may also have access to quick-navigation and content-skip menus. The accessibility interface may provide shortcuts such as M for menus, H for headings, F for forms, B for buttons, and G for graphics.
Disability Profiles Supported
- Epilepsy Safe Profile: Helps reduce the risk of seizures by eliminating flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
- Visually Impaired Profile: Adjusts the website for common visual impairments, including reduced eyesight, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and others.
- Cognitive Disability Profile: Provides assistive features intended to help people with cognitive disabilities, including autism, dyslexia, and the effects of a cerebrovascular accident, focus on essential elements more easily.
- ADHD Friendly Profile: Reduces distractions and visual noise to help people with ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions browse, read, and focus on essential elements.
- Blind Users Profile (Screen Readers): Adjusts the website for compatibility with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.
- Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor Impairments): Helps people with motor impairments operate the website using the Tab, Shift+Tab, and Enter keys, together with available keyboard shortcuts.
Additional User Interface, Design, and Readability Adjustments
1. Font adjustments: Users may increase or decrease font size, change the font family, and adjust spacing, alignment, line height, and other text settings.
2. Color adjustments: Users may select color-contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome, and may adjust the colors of titles, text, and backgrounds.
3. Animations: Users may stop running animations, including videos, animated images, and CSS transitions.
4. Content highlighting: Users may emphasize important elements such as links and titles, or highlight focused and hovered elements.
5. Audio muting: Users with hearing devices or sound sensitivities may mute the entire website.
6. Cognitive assistance: The interface may provide access to reference tools intended to help users understand phrases, initials, slang, and other terms.
7. Additional functions: Users may be able to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and use other accessibility functions.
Browser and Assistive Technology Compatibility
We aim to support a wide range of browsers and assistive technologies so users can choose the tools that work best for them. The accessibility features are designed to support major browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera, and Microsoft Edge, as well as screen readers such as JAWS and NVDA on Windows and macOS.
